Don’t get me wrong
I love the world that Cassandra Clare created. I think it’s fresh and a nice idea but sometimes I really have to side eye her when I read. Some of her characters bother me.
Jocelyn: She is supposed to be this legendary shadow hunter, but when Sebastian and Jace end up in their house, she has no hands. She screamed and that was it. What kind of nonsense???
Alec: I was rooting for Alec for the longest and that is probably because he is gay and I can relate. But for some reason Alec has become a pest with this “Magnus has had multiple lovers” thing and the “OMG Maguns is going to live forever without me” thin. So the fuck what? I can understand his concerns but I was just wondering why he never thought about this before? Magnus has been around for a long long time and for him to have not even considered this before dating him is beyond me.
Clary: I don’t even know how to explain this girl. She is basically like Bella from Twilight in the sense that her boyfriend comes first. She basically left to go with Jace and Sebastian to some random ass apartment where none of her friend could get to and somehow we are supposed to be okay with that. What bothers me more is that in the first book she was scared she would get in trouble from being out late at that club with Simon but now she has no regard to Jocelyn being the mother. And I guess it’s because Jocelyn lied to her, but is Clary really still holding that over her mother’s head? She never out right says it, all of the other characters have to say it for us. Clary does not think with her head she thinks with her heart and that bothers me as a reader. She doesn’t consider her options. She let’s love drive her life. Maybe I am getting too deep into this for a teen romance novel, it just bothers me that she acts like she can handle herself but in every situation she gets into she almost dies.
Jordan and Maia: I skip over all of their parts. They are supporting characters in my mind. I don’t know why Clare wants us to like them. To me they are not playing into the bigger picture so why do I care if they make out in the corner?
I think Simon, Isabelle Jace, Luke and Magnus are the strongest more 3D characters in the series.
Simon: We see him go from this nerdy boy to a vampire who is still an outcast and is learning to cope with that rejection. He is rejected and I seriously hope that by the sixth book he can come to terms with that and not let that hold him back anymore.
Isabelle: The funny thing is whenever I picture her without her shadowhunter gear on, I think of her blonde hair and always wearing white (basically Emma Frost from the X-Men). She went from being the girl that played with boy’s hearts to actually opening up emotionally. She is coming to terms with the fact that she does want to find real love. She wants to be in a good place romantically and emotionally and I respect that.
Jace: his character is most consistent throughout the series and I respect that. He doesn’t change much but it’s because he was already 3D I suppose. He struggles with his identity as a shadowhunter and as a person throughout the series and Clary helps him come to terms with who he is a lot of the time. He realizes that he isn’t a horrible person but he eventually will find fault with himself some other way which I think is natural for some people.
Luke: I love Luke. He is the dad I always wanted. He is loving and caring. He isn’t even Clary’s father and he still looks out for her and Jocelyn. That is the best kind of person you could ask for. Someone who loves no matter what.
Magnus: He is another character I love. For a minute though, I was kind of worried. Magnus always told Alec and the others that whatever he does for them is because of Alec. That started to change as he became part of the group. I think that he let them take advantage of him because he was Alec’s boyfriend. But he turned back into the Magnus we know and love and broke up with Alec because he was over the petty teenage drama. He is wayyyyy too grown to deal with that nonsense and I think Clare did a good job at bringing his character back to his roots.
dreaming-of-rain-and-chocolate:
If Clary can wish Jace back to life and not Max, that shows you what kind of person she is.
I don’t think at the time she knew that Max was dead, and on top of that she didn’t see Max die while Jace was killed in front of her :/
She did know. They attended his funeral right before they prepared for war with the downworlders.
